Kiwanis Moments

Preserving the Stories That Define Kiwanis

For generations, Kiwanians have served their communities, changed lives, built friendships and stepped forward when they were needed most.

Some of those stories have been documented, though many exist only in the memories of the people who lived them.

Kiwanis Moments was created to capture those stories, in the voices of the Kiwanians who experienced them, and preserve them for generations to come.

Every Kiwanian Has a Story

A Kiwanis Moment isn’t a biography or a history of your club. It’s a story.

Maybe it was a service project that had an unexpected impact on a child or family, maybe it was a time when your community turned to Kiwanis for help, maybe it was an experience with a Key Club student, a friendship formed through service, or a small act that made a much bigger difference than anyone expected, or just maybe it’s simply a moment that reminded you why you joined Kiwanis — and why you stayed.

Those are the stories we want to preserve.

Kiwanis Moments / Video Showcase

Every Kiwanis Moment is different. Explore stories from Kiwanians who have spent years serving their clubs, their communities and the people around them.

Their stories tell us not only what Kiwanis does — but why it matters.

As the collection grows, visitors will be able to explore stories from different Kiwanians, clubs, communities and generations.

Stories Worth Saving

Some Kiwanians have spent 30, 40, 50 years or more serving their communities. Think about the stories contained within those years.

From projects that no longer exist, traditions that have changed, children who grew up, communities that faced difficult moments, friendships that lasted decades, and countless moments of service that may never have made the newspaper or appeared in a club newsletter. Unless we capture these stories, many will eventually disappear.

Kiwanis Moments preserves them in perhaps the most meaningful way possible — told by the people who were there.

Stories that Can Inspire Kiwanis Today

Preserving Kiwanis history is only part of the opportunity. These stories can also help today’s clubs communicate something that can be surprisingly difficult to explain:

What does it really mean to be a Kiwanian?

Kiwanis Moments can be shared:

  • At membership Open Houses and recruiting events.
  • During club meetings and new-member orientation.
  • With Key Club members and other young leaders.
  • On club websites and social media.
  • During community presentations.
  • At Kiwanis conferences and events.
  • With someone considering joining Kiwanis.

Facts and statistics tell people what Kiwanis does, but stories help people understand why it matters.

What’s Your Kiwanis Moment?

When you think back over your years in Kiwanis, what is one moment that has stayed with you?

That’s really all we want to know. You don’t need a script, you don’t need professional video equipment, and you certainly don’t need to be a professional speaker. We simply want you to tell your story.

A Kiwanian. A Story. A Smartphone.

Your Kiwanis Moment can be recorded with an iPhone, iPad, smartphone, tablet or similar device. In some areas, a Kiwanis Moments volunteer may also be available to sit down with you and help record your story.

Most stories will probably be just a few minutes long, although the story, rather than a stopwatch, should determine the length.

Authenticity matters far more than production quality.

Not Sure What Your Kiwanis Moment Is?

You probably have more than one. Think back over your time in Kiwanis and ask yourself:

Was there ever a time…

  • Your club helped a child or family you’ll never forget?
  • Your community called Kiwanis because help was needed?
  • A service project affected you personally?
  • A Key Club member or young person made a lasting impression on you?
  • Something unexpected happened during a project or event?
  • A Kiwanis friendship changed your life?
  • You looked around and thought, “This is why I’m a Kiwanian”?

Don’t worry about finding the biggest or most impressive story, just tell us the one you still remember.

Recording Your Kiwanis Moment

Keep It Simple

The goal isn’t to create a professionally produced video, but we just want to clearly see you, hear you and preserve your story.

A few simple suggestions will help:

  • Record with your phone or tablet horizontally.
  • Find a quiet, well-lit location.
  • Position the camera approximately at eye level.
  • Keep the phone or tablet stationary.
  • Speak naturally — don’t read from a script.
  • Submit the original video file rather than sending it through text or social media.

Most importantly: Relax and tell us the story as if you were sharing it with another Kiwanian.

For Kiwanis Clubs

Help Us Find the Stories in Your Club

Every Kiwanis club has members carrying decades of history with them. Help us find those stories.

Clubs can participate by identifying longtime members with meaningful stories, helping members record their Kiwanis Moments, or encouraging members to submit their own videos.

There is no cost for a club to participate.

Completed Kiwanis Moments become part of the growing collection and can also provide participating clubs with meaningful content to share at meetings, membership events, on their websites and throughout their communities.

The Technology Behind Kiwanis Moments

Built to Preserve These Stories for the Long Term

Kiwanis Moments is supported through a partnership between the Kiwanis Club of Windsor and MyVideoSpot, an award-winning video management platform.

MyVideoSpot has selected the Kiwanis Club of Windsor as a long-term charitable partner and is donating the video technology, hosting and infrastructure supporting the project.

The MyVideoSpot Video Showcase platform provides the public-facing home for the collection, while its backend technology manages the hosting, streaming and organization of the videos.

This means Kiwanis Moments is launching as a Northern Colorado initiative while having the technology necessary to grow to include clubs throughout the Rocky Mountain District and potentially beyond.

Most importantly, these donated services allow the project to grow without creating an ongoing technology expense for the Kiwanis Club of Windsor or the Rocky Mountain District.

Imagine This Collection Years From Now

Imagine hundreds of Kiwanians representing dozens, perhaps someday hundreds, of clubs telling stories spanning generations of community service.

A prospective member could hear firsthand why someone devoted decades to Kiwanis. A Key Club student could discover what their local Kiwanis club accomplished before they were born. A club could revisit projects and people that helped shape its community, or a family could hear a parent or grandparent tell a meaningful story in their own voice years after they are gone.

Future generations could understand not simply what Kiwanis did, but why generations of people chose to be part of it.

The technology required to preserve these stories is already in our pockets. The stories are already there. We simply need to ask Kiwanians to tell them.

About The Project: It Started With a Story

Kiwanis Moments began, appropriately enough, with a Kiwanis story.

For decades, Mike Kessler with the Kiwanis Club of Windsor, has worked with video and has seen firsthand its ability to capture and preserve personal stories in a way that photographs and the written word simply cannot. But it was hearing longtime Kiwanian Bob O’Connor share one of his own memorable Kiwanis experiences — his “Kiwanis Moment” — that sparked a bigger idea:

How many incredible Kiwanis stories are out there, living only in the memories of the people who experienced them?

And what happens to those stories if we don’t capture them? That question became the foundation for Kiwanis Moments.

Mike joined with Richard Ivey, a longtime member and historian of the Kiwanis Club of Windsor, to begin developing a way to preserve these stories, not as formal club histories or professionally produced documentaries, but simply as Kiwanians sharing the moments that have stayed with them.

With Bob’s story as the inspiration, the idea grew into a larger vision: create a collection that preserves these voices and experiences while also giving today’s Kiwanis clubs something incredibly valuable — authentic stories that demonstrate what being a Kiwanian and serving a community can really mean.

Kiwanis Moments is now an initiative of the Kiwanis Club of Windsor, Colorado, which serves as the founding organization and steward of the project. The goal is to begin by preserving stories from Kiwanians in Northern Colorado and then invite clubs throughout the Rocky Mountain District, and perhaps someday beyond, to add their own voices to the collection.

At its heart, however, the idea remains remarkably simple: Every Kiwanian has a story. Some stories are too important to lose.
